Stories Of Healing

From Those Who Have Experienced Renewed Hope At The Ranch

A teen girl’s reflection on her time in therapy…

“Lately I haven’t had anything to talk about in therapy because things are good and just normal. I have a lot to be thankful for from therapy. At first it was weird cause I didn’t know you, but then I got comfortable with you. I used to feel like nothing was working. But this helped me think about things that are deeper down and why things were how they were. This therapy helped me get to the point and actually deal with it. Before I wanted people to find out about what I did because I wanted help. Now I want them to know about me because I’m proud of myself.”

Hero’s Girl

We found Shallon through a search for a Christian counselor in our area who worked with children with adoption related trauma.  We felt like equine therapy might be a really good fit for our 7 year old who was needing to work through some big emotions related to her adoption.  From our very first session, Shallon helped us establish clear goals for therapy, including what my daughter wanted to learn. Our daughter fell in love with the horses and  seemed very comfortable with the counseling plan Shallon put together for her.

Throughout our time with Shallon, she continued to check in with my husband and I often and let us know how she thought therapy was going.  She has helped us to feel involved by having a parent session, giving us the opportunity to join our daughter in session and giving us “homework” to continue the therapy work at home.  As we end our time with Shallon, we can see a noticeable change in our daughter’s emotional regulation as well as her confidence in her own personal story. We feel like the goals established at the beginning were definitely met and we feel well equipped to continue supporting our daughter on her journey.  I would recommend Shallon to any parent hoping to find a competent, compassionate counselor.

Shallon is a great counselor, and I am so glad I gave her and the equine approach a shot. After many years seeing counselors in traditional settings where I felt frustrated over the lack of headway that was made, it was extremely helpful to engage with therapy in a more active (literally and figuratively!) manner. The horses add an element of teamwork/support that you don’t get otherwise, and they have an incredible sense of understanding, acceptance, and compassion about them. I highly recommend both Shallon and her horses!
